In English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting, the omission is a common phenomenon for the interpreter, especially for student interpreters due to theirlack of interpreting ability, interpreting experiences and effective preparation before interpreting.By investigating the omissions produced by the student interpreter in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting, the thesis aims at increasing student interpreter’s awareness of omissions during their simultaneous interpreting practiceso as to improve their output quality. Three objectives are involved in theresearch. Firstly, to investigate whether omissions are made consciously or unconsciously. Secondly, to explore whether familiarity with the speech topicwill influence the omissons. Thirdly, to explore the impact of omissions on translation output and the communication between the speaker and the audience.In order to achieve the objectives, an interpreting experiment participated by six student interpreters is conducted and a retrospective interview is designed to investigatewhat participants are thinking about when they are making omissions. Then, the thesis, based on Napier’s taxonomy of omissions and the experiment results, analyses four types of omissions, namely, unconscious omissions, conscious intentional omissions, conscious unintentional omissions and conscious strategic omissions.The analysis shows that in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting, student interpreters make all the obove four types of omissions, which can affect the communication between the speaker and the audience. In addition, interpreters’ familiarity with the speech topic can help them reduceerroneous omissions and produce a more efficient output.
