This paper selects Shantou Jianpu Village as the object of study to explore the migration activities, local development of new migrants and their changing relations with Qiaoxiang after the Reform and Opening up occurred. Since the Reform and Opening up, a large number of new migrants have immigrated from Jianpu to Thailand for their own development. Some of them have settled down in Thailand, while others are traveling between Thailand and China frequently for business. Because of the improvement of Chinese economy, there are some changes in Jianpu migrants’ activities. Their devotion of moving to Thailand depressed and turned to other city in China. When new migrants from Jianpu arrive in Thailand, they try hard to integrate into the local community, and also play an active role in Hometown Association affairs. They not only adapt to Thai culture but also preserved their own customs. Inheriting spirits of old migrants, new ones are concerned with hometown construction and are keeping touch with their village. Ancestral temple and celebrations are important platforms for the communication between new migrants and their hometown. Similarly, ancestral worship is an important emotional connection. As the road traffic has improved, the economy of Qiaoxiang is promoted rapidly. Jianpu has changed from “relying on money from Siam” to “earning money of Siam”, which reflects the transformation and deploitation of relations between Qiaoxiang and migrants.
