The theory of meaning is about the meaning of the linguistic expression theory, with the core position in the research of philosophy of language. Centering on "What is the meaning?", "What is the criterion of the meaning?" and so on, philosophers provides with so many answers, such as Verifiability, Testability, Standard of Probability, the Overall Empirical, Operability, Falsifiability etc.. Philosophers are keen to study the theory of meaning, but there is no consensus all along. Why philosophers have been so keen on theory of meaning? Because the theory of meaning involves many problems in the philosophy of logic, and the origin of many logic philosophical disagreements can be found in the theory of meaning. With regard to these differences, Mr. Wang Lu once said, "The main objective of investigating the theory of meaning is not the theory itself, but to reveal the logic method within the theory." The theory of meaning gives a philosophical justification for the construction of the logic system, which determines the selection and the construction of logic form. In other words, the theory of meaning is the philosophical foundation of logic research. In the study of theory of meaning, two authorities have to be mentioned, who are German philosopher Frege and contemporary British philosopher Dummet. Frege is recognized as the founder of theory of meaning. He believes truth is the core concept of the theory of meaning, then for the first time he made a clearest distinction between the meaning and reference of linguistic expression, which has initiated a new phase of research on theory of meaning. Dummet, one world-well-known philosopher, not only proposed a new explanation of Frege’s theory of meaning, but also put forward a new design of his theory. In Dummet’s view, the conception of truth exists with the theory of meaning. In order to explain the conception of the truth, some semantic theory have to be added into and connected (especially the pragmatic aspects) with the theory of meaning. To some extent, Frege’s and Dummet’s theory of meaning are two kinds of different forms, however, the study shows that their understanding of the meaning and the truth is the same. The paper begins with Frege’s and Dummet’s theory of meaning and sums up two theories’theoretical characteristics and analogies, thereby cogitating the similarities and differences between the two and the development of the philosophy of logic from the perspective of the philosophy of logic.
