Tatyana Tolstaya is one of the influential novelists in Russian contemporary literary. She has published twenty-four short stories and one novel since 1983. There has been increasing attention to her style among critics and readers within her limited works, which have been translated into English, German and Chinese. The novel The Slynx featured in her creations which rapidly improved her public profile and is well-known as Encyclopedia of Russian life.Although there have been controversial remarks and different judgements on her The Slynx from various circles of society, it is undoubtedly dystopia tendency. The Russian dystopia literature occurred in the early 20th century, which has never been dominant in Russian literature. However, it reflects the social reality and alerts the society as it is never neglected. It must be admitted that Tolstaya sparked the dystopia literature in Russian at the very beginning of 21st century. According to the influence of dystopia on contemporary Russian literate and the inadequacy of study on the dystopia style in Chinese literary, the thesis attempted to study The Slynx by Tatyana Tolstaya from the perspective of dystopia.The thesis is composed of introduction, three chapters, conclusion and bibliography.The introduction mainly introduced the development of Russian dystopia and writing experience of Tolstaya, and summarized the domestic and foreign researches on The Slynx. It finally pointed out the research, subject, theoretical and practical significance, innovation, objective and commission.The first chapter described the mythical scenery of a united country after a big explosion. The presence of Dystopia literature comes from the unsatisfactory on the reality and worries about the human prospect, whose purpose is to guide people to reflect the human life fantasy itself. The novels of dystopia basically revealed and crashed the beautiful mysterious kingdom, bringing insight to the real world in the reality. It specifically analyzed the mythical plot and images in the novel, such as the slynx, and peacock princess, which symbolize the different levels in human mind including kindness and evil, life and death. They are mutually contradictory and dependent and thus highlight the satire of reality in the ridiculous mythical dystopia.The second chapter emphasized the unique philosophical characteristics through the exploratory spirit of the heroes and cultural differences between two generations in The Slynx. The hero Benedikt represented the image of intellectuals of his generation, who was intensely eager, indeed avid, for books but didn’t understand the real meaning in them. He injured cruelly harms innocent populace and tried every means to possess books, and then became an accomplice in power. The person Nikita Ivanich from the past was capable of memorizing traditional culture and burdening the mission of reviving it. He attempted to rekindle the memories of traditional culture to the new generations after the big explosion but failed eventually. The idea of dystopia in this works subverted the cultural Totalitarianism. The author expressed the loss of traditional culture and stressed the significance of Russian traditional culture inherent. The main character of the novel, as the representative of intellectuals, was eager for the books under the age of cultural despotism. The author argued the Russian cultural tradition by means of this hero, which demonstrated the thinking on the cultural developing route under the cultural Totalitarianism.The third chapter mainly displayed the distinctive artistic characteristics of The Slynx. The novel is unique in writing style, Structure Alignment and Space and time arrangement. The past and future was contrasted and compared, they were interfaced with the presence. The past, future and presence were inextricably bound up with the characters. It highlighted the totalitarian hazards of on individual development, which made dystopia play a conspicuous role in alerting and criticizing the reality. And thus the thesis encouraged the exploration of human current living situation.The conclusion summarized the whole content of the thesis and indicated the future influence and significance of the research.
