A Translation Project Report On The Column Of Papers On Smart Grid

Electric power industry is a basic industry and important public utility that supportssocial and economic development, with the rapid development of which, the issue ofenvironmental protection, the optimization of energy structure and how to deal withclimate change and achieve sustainable development all propose a much higher demand tothe transitional development of power grids. In this context, smart grid, a hot topic inglobal power industry, has become an inevitable trend of the world’s future grids and thecommon choice for international power industry to address challenges in the future.Therefore, this translation project, taking the articles on smart grid as the objects, isdesigned and carried out with practical significance in order to understand thedevelopment situation on the smart grids in other countries and learn from their excellentexperiences on developing smart grids.Based on case studies of this translation project of the papers on smart grid, thisthesis summarizes the general translation methods and skills on translating nominaltechnical terms, common words, passive voice sentences, attributive clauses and othercomplicated long and difficult sentences. Firstly, the professional features and normativityof technical texts are directly reflected in the accurate translation of nominal technicalterms; when translating common words, certain professional knowledge is required fortranslators to choose the most appropriate meanings in line with the context. Besides,passive voice sentences can be translated by the use of Chinese passive or active voice totransmit the original message in an objective way. In addition, attributive clauses can beflexibly translated in to Chinese attributive or non-attributive constituents according tospecific sentence structures. Moreover, for the large number of complicated long anddifficult sentences in the technical texts, translators can divide the sentences through themethods of adding, omitting, changing orders and reorganizing, so as to make thetranslated texts in accordance with Chinese way of expression. In translating English technical texts, no matter for technical terms or complicatedsentences, understanding professional knowledge is of special importance in delivering theoriginal information accurately and fluently throughout the whole translation process. Intranslating technical texts, in order to effectively overcome the obstacles caused by thelack of professional knowledge, translators should emphasize more on the constantaccumulation of professional knowledge, so that the very appropriate wording can bechosen in accordance with the context, and the quality of translated texts can be improvedwith expertness and objectivity reproduced from the original ones meticulously.
