A Practice Report On E-C Simulation Interpreting Of A Policy-Advocating Speech By Lisa Jackson From EPA, USA

This report is based on the English-Chinese interpreting simulation program of the policy advocating speech from EPA, USA. By reviewing and analyzing the interpreting preparation and field interpreting process as well as the typical cases, the report attentively explores the following aspects in mini-scale interpreting projects of such kind of speech contents: How to do inference and anticipation before and among the interpreting; How to achieve precision, understandability, and simplicity, also the communicative purposes and functions of the source text as well with suitable adaptation skills in the interpreting course; How to ensure the quality and timeliness of the interpretation within the task time limit; and how to dedicate the interpreter’s senses of responsibility.The author reveals the purposes of interpreting task by anticipating and inferring the purposes of the speaker and assuming the possible features of the source text, which are the characteristics of instructiveness, informativeness and persuasiveness. For the target of quality interpretation, the following skills are presented and analyzed in this dissertation: Word meaning selection, repetition, word meaning specification and obfuscation at word and phrase level and sentence paratactic and hypotactic, negation,division at sentence interpreting level. Besides, inference and anticipation both at preparation and field process are also critical to the interpretation, which are highly valued by the author for their great contribution to interpreters’ understanding of the source text.As author believes, an interpreter shall have a comprehensive understanding of interpreting for an inter-lingual and cross-cultural communication process may involve many factors. A good preparation and precise application of proper interpreting techniques are definitely compulsory in fulfilling the interpreting task with fine quality,achieving the purposes and functions of the source text and presenting its original sense.It is author’s expectation that this report can humbly but honestly offer some help or reference for the field interpreting of such kind.
