A Translation Report On Technical Text Of "Roadway Lighting"

The translation practice report is written on the basis of the Roadway Lighting translation project with a word count of 15,280, completed in July 2014 at the request of Qianhao Technology Company Ltd. This report describes the process of completing the translation project of English for Science and Technology.In this report, the author gives a summary of the technical document features in lexical and syntactic aspects, which includes not only the application of a variety of technical terms, semi-technical terms, derivatives and compound words, but also the usage of nominalization, non-finite verbs, passive voice sentences and long sentences. During the translation project, the author uses skills of amplification and conversion to handle the translation on the word level. For passive voice sentences, the author uses three ways to make the translation:translating passive sentences into Chinese active sentences, into Chinese no-subject sentences, or into Chinese passive sentences. For long sentences and clauses, especially for nominal clauses and attributive clauses, the author uses the translation skills including translation in original order, translation in reverse order, division, and combination. By adopting various translation skills, the author completes the project by providing a high-quality translated document, which faithfully conveys the original meaning with clear and coherent expression in accordance with the client’s requirements.Through the translation project, the author is aware of the significance of grasping more documentation skills to raise the work efficiency. At the same time, a translator should be familiar with the work flow of translation in a sophisticated company so as to complete the project more smoothly.
