Abstract/Summary:
Chinese Bridge, the overseas students contest, which is sponsored by Hanban, is held annually. The whole contest is divided into a number of parts and different questions. Chinese Bridge is not only a TV program, but also focuses on testing the medium-level Chinese learners, which has been the most vivid dynamic language data for researchers.Chinese Bridge Competition does not only examine the foreign students’ oral Chinese, but also their listening comprehension. The learners’level can be reflected from the two aspects. According to the 2013 online competition, I recorded oral Chinese data which lasts thousands of minutes, to summarize the learning characteristics of medium-level Chinese learners and put forward the specific opinion about teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. My thesis contains six chapters.Chapter One introduces the origin of the thesis, the significance of the study, achievements and shortages of this study in the world.Chapter Two is about the study method. I point out the feature of linguistic data in Chinese Bridge, and then I design a study method to research the expressive ability of contestants through speaking and listening. In Chapter Three and Chapter Four I use the language performance method to analysis the accuracy, complexity, diversity and fluency of the Chinese language learners in performance. In the aspect of the accuracy of the tone, I found the Chinese Bridge contestants would make some tone errors, which was different to the former researches. Perhaps, the Chinese Bridge contestants avoided it deliberately when they realized the most difficult tone.In the terms of words accuracy, the paper points out that the inappropriate use of quantifiers, the improper choice of words and wrong core words are the three main aspects of vocabulary mistakes of Chinese Bridge contestants. In the aspect of the accuracy of syntax, contestants made more mistakes in the missing and wrong generation of the syntax, while the error rate in the mistakes and the order mistake is relatively low, so the words accuracy is higher than the syntax. As for the language complexity, the paper points out that more outstanding contestants use C and D level words. Meanwhile, the extensive use of idioms, sayings, proverbs is good to improve their language complexity. However, the study shows that the contestants who are folly prepared before the competition perform differently from those without preparation in the sentence length. TV program competition’s environment has an impact on it as well.In the aspect of language diversity, senior Chinese bridge contestants have attached the great importance to use the associate words to enhance the expression, although the use of the associate words are repeated too many times, and even wrong. But the use of bei, bi, and verb-supportive is less.In the terms of language fluency, there is great difference between contestants. The paper points out that, the debating environment can stimulate growth in language fluency, while the negative growth is showing in lower level learners.Chapter Five analyzes the listening skills of Chinese Bridge contestants. For them, their oral Chinese is better than their listening. I found that the rate of speech isn’t related to the accuracy of listening comprehension positively. The topic of listening materials, which it is about the aspects of daily life, is related to the accuracy.Chapter Six proposed that, only by strengthening the interaction between teaching and learning, and shortening the distance between knowledge and reality, foreign students can be more interested, therefore they can upgrade their level of Chinese. On account of the interactivity in Chinese Bridge Competition, this article finally proposes suggestions about teaching Chinese as a foreign language from the perspective of the teaching Chinese phonetics, characters, and listening.
