Idiom(Chengyu) is a special form of Chinese glossary, and an outstanding characteristic of traditional Chinese culture. As Chinese idioms exist in large number, and have been used widely with far-reaching significance, idiom teaching has become an important part in TCFL vocabulary teaching. For Japanese students, who are also in the ”cultural cycle of Chinese characters”, similar expressions in Japanese have raised their interests in idioms when learning Chinese. However, Chinese idiom learning is also a challenge for them during their study due to the complexity of the idioms. Therefore, it is of actual use to study idiom teaching in TCFL teaching for Japanese.This paper is consisted of four parts. The first part mainly explained the reason for choosing this topic, its meaning of study and research status; the second part focused on the definition, nature, and feature of Chinese idioms, analyzed the meaning and difficulty in idiom teaching during TCFL work, and summarized the situation of Chinese idiom teaching towards Japanese students; the third part classified and analyzed Chinese-Japanese idiom translation methods from the perspective of translation theory, introduced “format equivalence and dynamic equivalence”, “semantic translation and communicative translation”, and “domestication translation and foreignization translation”, and explained the relationship between the above theories and two translation methods, namely, literal translation and free translation. Through literal translation and free translation, this paper has summed up three kinds of Chinese idioms under specific idiom translation cases, which are idioms with the same formation, with similar formation, and with different formation; the forth part summarized the characteristics of the above three kinds of idioms, analyzed error using of idioms by Japanese students, provided relevant teaching inspiration for each kind of idiom, and designed relevant teaching cases.This paper studies Chinese idiom teaching towards Japanese from the perspective of translation, and uses the Japanese-Chinese translation methods to guide Japanese students in better learning and mastering Chinese idioms. This study will be of significance for Chinese idiom teaching towards Japanese, and also for the whole TCFL system.
