Higher vocational education is to train highly qualified technical personnel, its professional, curriculum, teaching concept and mode are different with other education, teachers and students have their characteristics. From the curriculum, English teaching is a basic course in higher vocational colleges, belonging to the school compulsory course, for the all non English major students. The second grade students in Higher Vocational Colleges major technical English course. In practical work, we find that the English public course in the teaching process have some good results, such as the students mastered the language knowledge, and improve their learning ability, but still have some problems, such as the students’overall learning was significantly lower than that of ordinary undergraduate colleges and universities, students lack interest in learning, poor creative thinking, lack of self-learning ability, poor psychological quality, adaptive ability are very weak, ineffective learning; teachers feel difficult for teaching, teaching task too much for teachers, teaching effect is not high. These problems have seriously restricted the public English courses in Higher Vocational English teaching, to cope with the challenges, we must improve the quality of personnel training, to strengthen the teaching reform, innovation, improve the quality of teaching. In this regard, we take the Guangzhou modern information engineering College as the research example, using the method of questionnaire survey, interview, probes into the present situation of Public English course in higher vocational colleges, then combined with the current situation of higher vocational education, puts forward some suggestions and strategies to improve the teaching quality of English teaching, help students to know the knowledge of English, culture and master English learning skills.For a long time, our research for the public English teaching is mainly for English teaching in universities, the teaching of Public English course in Higher Vocational Colleges research is less. In order to improve the teaching quality of English Teaching in higher vocational colleges, we need to further strengthen the study on its. This research mainly uses the literature method, questionnaire method, interview method etc.. First, access to relevant literature about public English teaching research present situation in Higher Vocational Education in China. Second, through the questionnaire, interviews and other methods, set Guangzhou modern information engineering College teachers and students as the research object, a total of 764 questionnaires were issued,430 were recovered,430 effective questionnaires, efficiency is 56.3%. The interview objects were selected in 40, the vice president in charge of teaching affairs is 1 people, office director of 1 people, director of the English Department of Commerce 1. In order to ensure the preciseness of interviews, include English teacher 27 people, students 5 counselors, school personnel 2 people,3 graduates. The results of the survey using Microsoft Excel 2007 software to analyze.The survey found that at present the following problems exist in the public English courses teaching in higher vocational colleges including the teaching quality of the teachers; teachers of the heavy task of teaching; teaching evaluation method single affects teacher’s teaching enthusiasm; students lack of learning initiative; poor learning satisfaction; students cannot understand public English and professional English relations; the foundation of students’ English learning achievement is generally low level.The reason of teaching problems in English public course in higher vocational colleges is Public English courses teaching effect is affected by many factors influence; teaching method lacks pertinence; teachers neglect students according to their aptitude; English learning environment single; teachers strength is weak; class teaching affects students’learning initiative; lack of modern teaching equipment; teachers cannot make full use of modern teaching technology; teaching design’s rationality problems.In order to solve the problem of Public English courses teaching in higher vocational colleges, we put forward the suggestions and strategies:one is to pay attention to the use of a variety of teaching model to improve the effect of English teaching, make full use of autonomous learning teaching model, hierarchical teaching model, task-based teaching model, project teaching mode etc.. The two is to strengthen the construction and establishment of the course materials, which is to use the multi intelligence theory to arrange the teaching material, reform the compiling way of the textbook, and construct the fine course system.. Three is to pay attention to teachers’professional development and training teachers of "double teacher type", namely, to train teachers lifelong learning concept; used many ways to promote the professional growth of teachers; attach importance to the cultivation of teachers of "double teacher type"; improve teachers’ salary in order to promote the teaching enthusiasm. Four in English teaching activities pay attention to people-oriented, to choose the appropriate teaching method, understand the students’ needs, to provide a good learning environment for students. Five is the reform and improve enrollment mode. Six is to guarantee the higher vocational education funds, improve the financial allocation system, multi financing, and strengthen the financial management system. Seven is to improve the students’ awareness of the importance of English learning.
