With the continuously dramatic improvement in China’s economic clout as well as its international influence and the exponential increase in international intercourse, Craze for Chinese Language has been sweeping every corner of the globe. The rapid development of China is benefiting many countries and regions worldwide, thus making Chinese language an useful tool for a great number of people of all walks of life and consequently, the demand for Chinese teachers is rising considerably accordingly. Chinese government, therefore, launched the Master’s Degree of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and installed such degree programs at some major universities. Directional Program for Developing Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages offered necessary directions on the curriculum setting of such postgraduate degree programs. In practice, we should pay extra attention to the disturbingly serious facts that graduate students come from quite different education backgrounds and the overall academic qualifications are sadly unsatisfactory, which requires in-depth examination and drastic actions so that proper programs will be installed at these universities. Based on analysis of the current programs at 5 universities as well as the postgraduate students with questionnaires and after comparing the similarities & differences of those institutions, the author puts forth a string of suggestions. The thesis consists of 4 Chapters.Chapter one discusses the research background and significance. In this chapter, the author outlines the objectives of such programs and curriculum setting stipulated in Directional Program for Developing Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and according to the research on the programs, the author further generalizes the findings of previous research and introduces research methods and aims of this thesis.Chapter two stages the similarities & differences concerning the objectives and course mapping of the postgraduate programs in the 5 universities.Chapter three is about the research and analysis of the professional courses. The author elaborates on the aims, targets and design of this thesis, which covers multiple aspects, i.e. personal information of targets, targets’ assessment, teaching features and the influence of art class on targets, etc..Chapter four presents a series of suggestions on the curriculum setting of postgraduate programs.Chapter five is epilogue.
