This thesis studies John Corigliano’s new orchestral work, "One Sweet Morning," which expresses how to advocate important social issues by analyzing the cultural connotation and compositional techniques. We summarize his treatments of combining music creation techniques with a part of The Iliad, Tang-Dynasty poem, Polish and American poetry. The thesis consists of introduction, text and conclusion, and the text consists of four chapters:The first chapter analyzes the music content and the translation of poems, and then further studies the effect on music. The second chapter interprets the integration of music and poems by analyzing the overall layout, pitch and harmonic structure. The third chapter explains how does the combination of orchestration and texture expresses both the cultural connotation and Corigliano’s personal orchestration style. The fourth chapter discusses the intercultural relationship between poems and music that focuses on connection between poetic connotation and compositional techniques. Finally, we draw a conclusion that there are two compositional features and personal music language in Corgiliano’s "One Sweet Morning":1, Connotation and compositional techniques complement each other; 2, a new expression type that demonstrates special cultural connotation by focusing on "innovation":(a) To use four poems from different culture to reflect the "9·11", (b) to express the meaning of "War, Peace and Life" from different dimensions of history and human cultures.
