Now the international political and economic patterns have been undergoing profound and complicated changes. China, as a constantly rising developing country, has a pressing need to learn about the political and economic situations around the world. News is a significant way for people to know the affairs around the world. Political news, containing policies of countries as well as the every aspect of civic life in the globe, attracts a worldwide attention. Since English is still the main language adopted in international media, it is necessary and vital to translate English news reports into Chinese to make Chinese people know better about the outside affairs. In the last several decades, with the unprecedented progress of English news transmission, news translation has sprung up in a surprising speed. But at the same time, due to the different language systems as well as political and cultural backgrounds, it is hard to translate exactly the source information into another language. For the sake of improving the quality and impact of news translation in China and thus obtaining a positive as well as favorable image in international arena, it is dispensable for Chinese to explore the translation process and the translator’s role and function in Chinese translation of English political news.Eco-tranlatology, proposed by Chinese scholar Hu Gengshen, transplants and simulates the basic theory of “survival of the fittest” in natural ecology into translation studies. As an interdisciplinary study, Eco-translatology explores translation from an ecological perspective and describes translation as “a translator’s adaptation and selection in a translational environment”. It views translation process as a train of “adaptation and selection” activities in a translational eco-environment. Its research object is “translation environment—translator—translation version”. Under such framework, a translator plays a center part in translating process. This thesis will focus on the news translator’s adaptive selection and selective adaptation from three dimensions including linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions, so as to make the translated versions more suitable and feasible in the translational eco-environment. And in the last section of the thesis, some limitations of this study and suggestions for further studies are also mentioned.
