| Ear-voice span (EVS) refers to the time interval from hearing the speaker to beginning interpreting. The mainstream view in Europe holds that interpretation is the communication of meaning and linguistic differences could be ignored, and that the interpretation process of different language pairs is the same if interpretation methods are mastered. However, the author hypothesizes that interpretation tactics for different language pairs differ, and EVS is one of them.To verify the hypothesis, this thesis compares the EVS in English-Chinese and Japanese-Chinese simultaneous interpretation of the same speech through quantitative and qualitative research. In the quantitative analysis, data are collected from6E-C interpreters and6J-C interpreters, and10English sentences and10Japanese sentences are selected as samples for analysis. The EVSs of sample sentences and all sentences are then measured and recorded, the average EVSs are calculated and comparative analysis is conducted. In the qualitative analysis, the EVS is classified into five types, and the EVS difference in E-C and J-C interpretation is explained.The result shows that the E-C EVS is1.43～1.53times the length of the J-C EVS, which counters the mainstream opinion in Europe, due to different tactics used in different language pairs.In conclusion, the author summarizes the findings, and proposes areas to be improved. In the meantime, this thesis indicates direction for further research in tactics used in different language pairs. It draws attention to interpretation tactics as a means to improve interpretation competency. |
