An E-C Translation Report On HUBCO Project Construction Bidding Document

Translation has promoted the cultural exchanges of the world and the progress of the whole society. With the rapid development of globalization, technical translation has already become one of the most common translation businesses. This kind of translation requires that the language should be accurate, rigorous and objective, because the quality of the translation often exerts a direct influence on clients’ job.The report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the bidding document for HUBCO project launched by Gansu Construction Co., Ltd. The author received the task from her supervisor during the intership in July, 2014. The tender is composed of 11 parts and the author’s task is to translate the sixth part of 10,151 words, which mainly involves the supply scope of coal unloading facilities, the coal’s storage and processing unit, power of coal island, boilers, water steam cycle, steam turbine and condensing system.In order to complete this translation project timely and efficiently, the author has made a thorough preparation before translating the source text. First of all, the author has analyzed the characteristics of the text, and then made a translation plan according to the client’s requirements to ensure that the project could go smoothly. In the process of translation, the author has selected Nida’s functional equivalence theory and Peter Newmark’s theory on translation strategy as the guidance, and made detailed analysis of the application of some translation skills and strategies in technical text from the aspects of lexical, syntactic and textual levels. Finally, the author has summarized the major findings and the limitations in translation.This thesis mainly discusses the translation of the technical terms used in bidding document, and analyzes the text language as well as its style characteristic, and also offers some related translation skills. In addition, the report highlights the point that it is essential for translators to master the two languages involved, to be familiar with specialized knowledge concerned and technical terms and to be skillful at using translation theory, methods and techniques when dealing with technical texts. Meanwhile, much attention should be paid to every step in the implementation of the project. Most importantly, translators should abide by the professional ethics and make every effort to satisfy the need of the customer. It is hoped that this report can provide help for the future scholars and translators engaged in the research or translation on such kind of texts.
