Chinese character is the foundation of Chinese language, it is also one of the most important and difficult part of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. However, the circle of teaching Chinese as a foreign language does not pay much attention to Chinese character teaching, both domestically and internationally. In a long time, our teaching method is moved from Indo-European method, which ignores the special features of Chinese characters itself, especially the sound-elements of phonogram which can help the students by indicating pronunciation, is not efficiently exerted. At the same time,it always focus on the study for Chinese language students, but the research is very weak for the medical students which takes the largest proportion of international students studying in China. It failed to find out a more suitable and efficient way of teaching Chinese phonograms, which should be based on the learning content and learning situation of foreign students. This paper studies Chinese characters from the most widely used Medical Chinese textbook, which is called “Practical Medical Chinese(Preclinical1)”.Firstly, it analyzes the rationality of word selection through contrastive study.Secondly, it classifies and analyzes the characteristics of the components of Chinese phonograms.
