This is a translation report. The translation materials is excerpted from Ayele Abebe’s dissertation Influences of Individual and Contextual Factors on Improving the Professional Development of TVET Teachers in Ethiopia of Kaiserslautern University of Technology, provided by Research Institute of Vocational Education of Pedagogy Department of Beijing Normal University. There has been no Chinese edition so far since its publication in 2010.There are seven chapters in this dissertation, and the third and fourth chapters were chosen as the task of translation practice, covering about thirteen thousand four hundred and forty-three words. The text is suitable for researching the characteristics of the academic texts in vocational education and discussing translation strategies and methods. It has a certain reference value for teachers and administrators of vocational education academies. In the report, the translator first introduces background, contents and characteristics of the source text. Then the translator introduces the preparations done before the draft translation such as preparation of reference materials and translation theory, including materials related to the translation task, books on translation theories and skills that will be used in the translation process. The translator finally decides to choose Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory as guidance to seek for natural transformation and functional equivalence from English to Chinese. In the case analysis, the translator analyses some examples from seven translation skills such as translation of passive voice, division and combination. The last part is conclusion of the translation practice. The translator benefits a lot from the translation practice. A translator must do preparation work very well before the draft translation, collect materials related to the source text and read parallel texts. And a translator should analyze the source text and revise the translated text repeatedly to ensure the quality of translation. There still exist some disadvantages in the translated text because of the translator’s limited ability, for example, the translator fails to give appropriate translation to several subtitles and satisfactory translation of some long and difficult sentences. To sum up, it is realized that a qualified translator must have solid bilingual competence and strong translation competence.
