This translation report takes, as its translation materials, chapter 6 of Influences of Individual and Contextual Factors on Improving the Professional Development of TVET Teachers in Ethiopia, a doctoral thesis from the University of Kaiserslautern of Germany written in 2010. This translation practice takes the theory of Nida’s "functional equivalence" as its theoretical framework.The doctoral thesis has a systemic study of the professional development of TVET teachers in Ethiopia. Its content involves various aspects including the education system in Ethiopia, the basis for professional development of TVET, TVET teacher education practices, presentation of empirical results, and so on. It might suggest lessons for promoting the professionalism of teachers in China. The author selects Chapter Six of the thesis, which is entitled Analysis of Empirical Results, as the source text of the translation report. This doctoral thesis is more professional, with objective expressions, close logic, and standardized language. It uses formal words and precise sentence patterns. Last but not least, it is at an appropriate difficulty level for translation. Therefore, it is a good example to probe into translation strategies of academic papers in E-C translation.This translation report firstly introduces the application of the translation text and its values in translation research. Secondly, it gives a description of the translation task which includes a brief introduction of the content of the translation task and the features of the translation text. Thirdly, it discusses the translation procedures including the preparation before translation, selection of the translation theory and methods and translation process. Among it, examples analysis, as an important part, with typical translated examples, analyses the vocabulary and syntax difficulties and their translation methods. In the end comes the conclusion of this translation practice. It shares the personal experience learned when doing this translation practice, summarizing the translation key points of English academic papers and the translator’s literacy to be increased. Meanwhile, it mentions some shortcomings with this translation practice. This translation report presents the translation ideas of the author, with a summary of the translation methods used in hope to provide some references for future translation of such type of texts.
