Xixiang Ji, the ever-lasting masterpiece of the eminent playwright Wang Shifu, is regarded as one of the most shining pearls in the history of Chinese classics for its poetic language, moving tune and romantic love. Known for the exquisiteness in writing, Wang Shifu has applied a series of graceful language to create this giant work. Those who read it will be absorbed in it. The dramatic verse in the play basically belongs to the genre of poetry, which possesses great aesthetic values. Hence, the study of the aesthetic values of literary works from the perspective of translation aesthetics plays an important role in spreading Chinese classic culture and expanding its influence. Based on the Chinese contemporary translation aesthetics, this thesis makes a tentative study on the transference of the beauty of the dramatic verse in Xu Yuanzhong’s English version of Xixiang Ji. The author of this thesis holds that the purpose of the literary translation lies in transferring the beauty of the original, enhancing readers to experience the beauty and making the readers intoxicated in the beauty. Accordingly, the translator must integrate the aesthetic sensory abilities with the literary attainments when carrying on the translation practice to sense the beauty, find the beauty and present the beauty to the target readers. Also, the author of this thesis hopes her attempt can attract more scholars to research the translation of Chinese classic plays.
