Nowadays, the statement “Once the information is utilized by war, it could be the sharpest weapon” has been approved by more and more military scientists. When information becomes a kind of weapon, it strikes the enemies’ cognitive systems and impacts the directors’ decision making through psychological trauma caused by information, undermining soldiers’ will to fight and inducing all kinds of mental disorders. Under today’s international situation, high-tech local wars have become principal forms of modern warfare, and soft kill and wound instrumentality has become the major trauma caused by information war. After Libyan War, the commander of NATO pointed out that military exploits obtained by MISO have occupied 70%-80% of the total battles. Allied forces won the greatest political, military and economic benefits at the lowest military cost, which is both a challenge and opportunity to us in seeing the effect of information trauma on future wars. Ever since the “information trauma” put forward by domestic military researchers, the use of information and mass media in war has rapidly become a hot issue. It is a serious problem posed by modern war that how to subdue the enemy without fighting by giving full play to the information in circumstances with rapid development of military technologies, highly advanced weaponry and quickly enhanced solo qualities. To answer this question, it is necessary for us to understand and investigate the whole procedure of information spreading. As the carrier of information, media play an essential role in the chain of transmission. There are countless relevant researches on media in the field of communication, yet we are still short of studies specific on military group. As special combat units, military group is both initiator and of information operation and receiver of information trauma. We have the reason to believe that the media contact of military group enjoys its own characteristics and patterns compared to normal audiences. In view of the change of social environment, even military fields are inevitably getting affected by information tide. The development and maturity of information warfare and psychological warfare have challenged traditional military power of countries around the world. To some extent, warring sides could strike the confidence and disintegrate the forces of enemies by fabricating and disseminating information, as it did in the case of the Kosovo War. Ever since the “information trauma” put forward by domestic military researchers, the use of information and mass media in war has become a hot issue rapidly. It is a serious problem posed by modern war that how to subdue the enemy without fighting by giving full play to the information in circumstances with rapid development of military technologies, highly advanced weaponry and quickly enhanced solo qualities. This research has investigated the fundamental status of soldiers’ media contact and explored how motivation directions, information involvement and types of message resources impact the communication effect of information. The main results of this research are as follows:1. Undergraduate students from military university and grass-roots soldiers use internet and television most separately, however, they trust their relatives more when it comes to judgments about right or wrong.2. The internet influences undergraduate students from military university most while television impacts grass-roots soldiers when they have need for news. Books and magazines are the most influential media when they have need for knowledge and skills.3. In spite of the message resources, both undergraduate students from military university and grass-roots soldiers trust information from close relations such as relatives, comrades-in-arms and superior leaders.4. When the same information has different versions of statements, the military group trust television most. Yet, due to their characteristics, information from comrades-in-arms and superior leaders is most trustworthy to them when it’s about career. When it comes to vital interests, they trust their relatives most.5. Different motivation directions(F=4.212,p<0.05) and message resources(F=8.528,p<0.01),different levels of information involvement(F=7.25,p<0.05)and message resources(F=5.06,p<0.01)have significant influences on information attitudes. Information involvement would impact behavior intention(F=13.44,p<0.01), dissemination inclination(F=7.52,p<0.01)and intention of exploration(F=25.36,p<0.01)after reading the message. The conclusions of present study are as follows:1. Media got most frequent contact are not necessary the most effective among military group on information dissemination. The real powerful resources are close social relationships like relatives, comrades-in-arms and superior leaders.2. The communication effect of information is influenced by different motivation directions and different message resources: military group with prevention focus give a higher value on the information and trust more when it is from the professionals.3. The communication effect of information is influenced by involvement levels: people with high involvement level would have trust the information more, and at the same time they are more intended to spread and explore the message.Innovation Points of the Research:First, we have given an intuitive presentation of the diversity of the media contact in military university and grass-root unit for the first time, and have provoked further thinking about the efficiency of information spreading.Second, we have put forward the concept of media effective rate, the meaning of which implicates the situation that the most often used media would not necessarily be the most effective one. This offers a new perspective for further exploration of the early warning and protection of information trauma.
