Picture as an important teaching resource is widely used in second language teaching. But there are not so much studies on picture used in language teaching,especially in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Due to the lack of systematic studies on this field, this paper investigated the use of pictures in Chinese comprehensive class teaching for beginner students. Picture can not only help students to enhance their understanding and memorizing abilities and stimulate students’ interest in learning and improve their learning efficiency to some extent, but also it can serve as a tool to create communicative situations and enrich the teaching contents.In the light of the characteristics of teaching pictures and other related theories, this paper discussed the use of pictures in various language elements with relevant examples. Then, taking the elementary classes in the Institute for International Education in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies as an example, a survey was conducted to look into the application of picture in comprehensive classes by the means of classroom observation and questionnaires. In the analysis of the results, the author pointed out the problems and provided solutions accordingly. Finally, the application on teaching process was discussed in the last chapter. Based on a specific lesson in the textbook Han Yu Jiao Cheng, this paper also discussed the use of pictures in each part of the teaching process in a comprehensive class. This paper is designed to help Chinese teachers make effective use of pictures as a teaching aid and to promote the research on the teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language.
