The research subject of this report is an excerpt of the Introduction, Chapter one and Chapter two from the translation of Copthorne Macdonald’s Getting a life.Peter Newmark’s classification of text type and communicative translation theory are employed during the translation practice. This theory advocates reader-oriented mode and inspires translators to show their initiatives in exploring the translatability of the original text so as to improve the readability of the translation. The analysis of the report is conducted from translation skills, translation strategies and translation theories covering words, phrases and sentences. This report is divided into four parts: 1) a brief introduction to the background of the original text and its contents, linguistic features and an explanation of the aims and significance of this translation; 2) statement of the translation process: from preparation to translation, correction to the report writing; 3) a detailed case analysis of the words, sentences and the paragraphs by applying Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory; 4) a reflection on the translation process and the problems arising in translation, and a summary of the inspirations and enlightens from the translation practice. The translation process has gone through several corrections and the final version is quite different from the first draft. The difference mainly manifests in the faithfulness and readability of the translation. The intricate translation process gives the author a deep understanding of the complexity and difficulty of translation. During the writing of the report, lots of cases are selected at first but then eliminated, because of the limited length of the report. But it is during the selection and screening process that the author compared, analyzed and categorized all the cases, which help the author to find out the generality and particularity and then enable the author to be more skilled in the use of translation strategies, adept at translation theories, and further understanding of the coming translation practice.
