| For a long time, several innovative science papers in China fail to gain recognition worldwide, which is due to the poor quality in its English translation. It indicates that the quality of English thesis translation needs improving. This paper mainly discusses the Chinese-English translation of Forthcoming Era of Biological Computer. With the application of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the paper generally covers three aspects, i.e. the translators’ comprehension of background, the use of translation tools as well as some translation skills. The paper first briefly introduces the translation background and preparations. In the case analysis, five aspects are discussed. In terms of punctuation translation, based on the text meaning and English language habits, some changes in punctuation marks should be made; as to word translation, sometimes one Chinese word has several English translations, so the most proper one should be chosen according to the context; when it comes to subject translation, the subject should be added in English translation when it is concealed in Chinese; in sentence translation, Chinese sentences are short while English ones are relatively long, so some short Chinese sentences should be integrated in a long English translated sentence; if the original text has ill-formed expressions, translators should correct it in translation to reach functional equivalence. To sum up, in C-E thesis translation, translators should pursue the equivalence in meaning instead of form. Proper translation tools and techniques should be adopted. The author hopes that this paper can be helpful in C-E thesis translation and in the recognition of Chinese scholars worldwide. |
