| As an important communicative means, euphemisms are widely used in many countries for a long time. Because of its significance, scholars have studied the euphemism from different perspectives. They contributed much to the development of the euphemism. The author of this dissertation tries to research the euphemism in new era from a comprehensive perspective.Adaptation Theory, which put forward the Belgian scholar Verschueren, provides a solid theoretical basis for us to study the euphemism. It holds the idea that the process of the language use, actually, is the process of making-choice which based on the characteristics of the language itself. The dissertation tries to study the euphemism in new era from the perspective of Adaptation Theory.It is effective to study the four angles first. They are the adaptation to the context, the structure, the dynamics, and the degree of salience. According to Verschueren, the contexts determine how to choose the euphemism in the communication. Besides, the structure of the language also plays an important role in the employment of euphemism. The salience of adaptation has essential influence on the choice-making. How to use the euphemism is affected by the degrees of the salience.Through the analysis on the euphemism in new era from the comprehensive pragmatic perspective, we can get the conclusion that the use of euphemism is a process to choose the language continuously. Under the guidance of the conclusion, we can make good use of the euphemism in our daily life to achieve the harmonious interpersonal relationship. |
