A Report On Translation Of A Global History Of Architecture

The source text of the translation task stems from A Global History of Architecture, published by the John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This book is mainly written by Mark Jarzombek, Professor of History and Theory of Architecture at MIT. It is about architecture development starting from the 3500 B.C. to 1950. The unsentimental style, with occasional terms in the text, makes the whole book quite suitable for the students majoring in architecture and scholars who are really into the related fields. The author of this report translated the sections from the “Public Sector Architecture” to the “Paris and Georges-Eugène Haussmann”.The thesis consists of two parts: translation task and its report. The former is the translation of an excerpt from A Global History of architecture, which totals more than 10,000 words. The latter is composed of five parts: Introduction to this translation task, Preparation before the task, Translation stages, Case study and Conclusion about this project.The translation project has made the translator deeply understand that translation is a laborious work. It calls for deep understanding of the cultures and the original text. Besides, semantic translation and communicative translation are two complementary methods in translating this book. It is hard to say one method is superior to another. Instead, an appropriate mixture of two methods works best for diversified tastes of readers.
