As an important movie genre, art film plays an indispensable role in the history of Chinese films more than a hundred years. In this paper, the art films are mainly refers to the personalized low-middle budget movies which not regard the box office as the highest purpose, oppose the stylized character and plot in content and try to use the original and experimental film language. Art film has been surviving in the depression for a long time, with the ultra-high evaluation and ultra-low box office. In the contemporary consumptive cultural context, for the survival and development, art film must change the original aloof attitude and add some popular element to cater the audience?s aesthetic taste. Otherwise art film will ruin.The pursuit of Art film is artistic quality and the essential characteristics of consumer culture is commercial, which seems to be a set of relative category, actually that is not really true. "Artistry" and "commercial" are the two sides of film, by creating a certain condition, the two can mutual reciprocity and mutual benefit. In this paper, after the reference of related literature and film text, the second chapter clearly put forward my understanding of art films, and clearly defined the Chinese art films.The third part of the paper refines the exploration and innovation of Chinese art films in the aspects of folk customs, records and film means from the point of aesthetic characteristics. the significance of art film to film career development in China is pointed out and the necessity of the art film in a consumer society is emphasized.Of course, the reasons of art films encountered dilemma today is not only the objective environment but also the lack of creation. In the fourth chapter of the paper analyzes the lack of film creation from the aspects of the film image-building, depth, and audio-visual language separately.The fifth chapter tries to put forward effective countermeasures for Chinese art films to adapt to the social context of consumer culture. Based on the current consumption markets, this paper holds that art film should learn from the experiences of commercial films in the two aspects of creation and marketing. In the aspect of creative ways, the audience’s approval mechanism, type movie and bright color should be brought to the art films; In the aspect of marketing strategies, strengthening the construction of marketing, refining the target audience and building the art theatres are nessary things to be done.At present, the work both in the art practice and theory are little relative to the commercial field in the film industry and academia at home and abroad. Aiming at this phenomenon, combined with the present social context of consumer culture, the problems existing in the art film are put forward, the delicate relationship between them is explored and the secrets to make them harmonious co-existence and mutually benefit are find out. All the works are expected to make contributions for the study of Chinese art films? theory.
