The U.S. Standards for Foreign Language Learning in 21st Century has been playing a key role in the practice of teaching Chinese as a Second Language. This thesis discussed the guiding effects for teaching under "5C" goals, which is the core concept of these standards and explored the principles and features of classroom teaching activity design for Chinese teaching through IDL (interactive distance learning) system, such as the design in Confucius Institute at the Kansas University (CIKU). Lastly, the common features of classroom activity design apply to IDL teaching Chinese was concluded based on the analysis of examples and interviews.This article mainly includes four parts:The first chapter is the brief introduction of the background and the overseas and domestic research situation, methods and procedures.In the second chapter, after studying the IDL teaching situation of Confucius Institute at the University of Kansas, I analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of IDL Chinese teaching along with its development prospect, comparing to traditional face-to-face Chinese teaching and another distance teaching method-web-based Chinese teaching.The third chapter mainly includes comments on the examples that classroom activity design for teaching Chinese in K-12 grades of Confucius Institute at the University of Kansas, from the perspective of pronunciation, vocabulary, Chinese characteristic and grammar, each with two examples.The fourth chapter talked about the meaning and principle of classroom activity design for IDL Chinese teaching. Besides, for the classroom activity design, this chapter consists of the conclusion on its advantages and disadvantages, analysis of its common features apply to IDL teaching and requirements and suggestions for teachers. And in the end there is conclusion and some defects for this thesis.
