A Reflective Report On Simulated Si Of Obama’s Speech At University Of Malaya

This is a reflective report on simulated English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting. The analysis of this report is based upon Obama’s Speech at University of Malaya. In April, 2014, US President Barack Obama paid a historic three-day visit to Malaysia. On the second day, President Obama made a speech at University of Malaya. He emphasized the key role Asia plays on the international stage and the necessity for the US to collaborate with Asian countries, both of which were closely bound up with the political and economic changes in Asia. Thus, this political speech is valuable for SI practice.On the basis of “Effort Model” proposed by Daniel Gile, the author has tried to imitate the real scene and videotaped the simulated SI process. Then she transcribed the video to a written material that was used for research and case study.Apart from introduction and conclusion, the main body of this report is divided into three chapters. Chapter One is task introduction, which makes a brief introduction on the background of Obama’s speech and several relative requirements. Chapter Two describes the task process, including pre-interpreting preparations, the interpreting process, and post-task analysis. Firstly, the author collects some precious parallel texts, and consults the theory on Effort Model. Then, she writes down the entire SI process carefully. Finally, the transcript of Obama’s speech is introduced and analyzed. Chapter Three is the core of this reflective report. The author elaborates problems she encountered during the simulated SI task, namely: tension and stress, intensive information, and misinterpreting. And she does case study on several typical examples. After self-examination and analyzing in detail, she proposes tactics correspondingly.In the conclusion, the author summarizes the simulated SI practice, including gains and enlightenment, which help her with accumulated lessons and experiences.
