From the cultural perspective, Lefevere holds that translation is manipulated by the external factors such as poetics, ideology and patronage in the target culture. The nature of translation is the manipulation of the source text under the influence of poetics, ideology and patronage. Based on Lefevere’s manipulation theory, this paper analyzes the poetical, ideological and patronage manipulations over the translator.Chen Ai Luo Ding, the novel by the Tibetan writer A Lai, is translated into English by the Goldblatts’. It enjoys great popularity in the western countries, but few Chinese scholars have studied the English version from the perspective of translation. With the English version serving as a case study, this paper gives detailed illustrations to the manipulative factors in the process of translation. To begin with, this paper explores the main translator Goldblatt’s personal poetics and ideology. Then, it sheds light on the poetics and ideology of the western society. In the next step, the paper analyzes the manipulative factor from the patronage. By studying the translation version of Chen Ai Luo Ding, this paper analyzes the manipulative factors of poetics, ideology and patronage towards the translator. In this course, the practicability of Lefevere’s manipulation theory is proven. This paper aims at providing a new angle for the studies on the English version of Chen Ai Luo Ding, as well as contributing to the studies on the outstanding translator Howard Goldblatt.
