Red Poppies, the first novel written by Alai,a famous contemporary Tibetan writer, tells the ups and downs of the Tibetan Chieftain Maichi Family. In 2002,the English version Red Poppies, translated by Howard Goldblatt and Slyvia Li-chun Lin,was published by Houghton Mifflin Company in the United States. As soon as it was published, the English version immediately attracted widespread attention and then was selected as one of the 100 best books of the year by the Los Angeles Times. However, despite its high reputation, little research has been conducted on its translationTranslation breaks down the barriers between different languages and cultures, and builds thebridge for cultural communication. In the 1970s,the study of translation theory experienced a transformation from pure language research to cultural research, and the researches began to explore the influence of cultural and historical factors on translation. In the 1980s and 1990s,the translation theorist Andre Lefevere made a systematic study of the manipulation theory of translation, proposing that translation is not only a simple conversion between two languages, but also influenced by ideology, poetics, and patronageBased on Andre Lefevere's manipulation theory, this paper adopts descriptive method to analyze the influence of poetics, ideology and patronage on the two translators' selection and rewriting of Red Poppies, and explores the strategies and methods of translation adopted in the rewriting of the original text.Through the comparison and analysis of the Chinese and English versions,it can be found that under the influence of the poetics, ideology and patronage of the target society, the translators mainly adopted the domestication strategy to accurately retell the original story in the target language. In addition, the Tibetan cultural characteristics are preserved by the means of foreignization. It is no coincidence that the Red Poppies has been a huge success in the Western world. The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of manipulation theory on the two translators, and the translation methods and strategies adopted by the two translators in the process of translation,so as to provide references for relevant translation studiesIn order to cater to the target language system, the two translators made reasonable rewriting of the original text to improve the fluency and readability of the translation, which was mainly reflected in the adjustment at language level and the rewriting at culture level. At the language level, the two translators adjusted the choice of words, sentences and narrative perspectives. At the culture level, due to the untranslatability of special cultural factors, the two translators mainly adopted the domestication strategy to rewrite it.Although the two translators tried their best to preserve the cultural characteristics of the original text, they had to make compromises in the selection and translation process due to the influence of the dominant poetics, ideology and patronage In the process of rewriting, the two translators were not limited to a single translation strategy or method, but made flexible adjustments according to the needs of context, and finally made the essence of the original text reflected in the translation, thus making the Tibetan mysterious chieftain system and the magnificent Tibetan culture successfully enter into the Western worldThis paper is divided into six parts. The first chapter mainly introduces the research background, research purpose and significance, research questions and methods,as well as the layout of the whole thesis. The second chapter reviews the domestic and foreign research on Chen Ai Luo Ding,Red Poppies and the translation studies of the two translators. The third chapter introduces the theoretical framework of this paper in detail, including the formation and development of the manipulation theory and the elaboration of the three manipulative factors. The fourth chapter analyzes the influence of ideology, poetics and patronage on the selection of the original text as well as the translation of the two translators.Through the comparison of the Chinese and English versions, the fifth chapter discusses the choice of translation methods and strategies by the translators in the process of translation. The sixth chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes the main findings and limitations of this paper and puts forward some suggestions for further research.
