A Report On The E-C Translation Of English Economic News

This thesis is a report on the E-C translation of English economic news from the official website of the Washington Post. Preparation before translation and process during translation is described in this report. Also the author discusses the problems occurring in translating as well as corresponding methods and strategies to solve them.Preparations are needed before translation. First, studying the originals to know the language and writing style to make the translation faithful and smooth. Second, reading the parallel texts to deepen the understanding. Two steps in translating are E-C translation and checking. That is to express the originals properly on the basis of full understanding, and times of checking are essential to ensure the quality of translation.As a highly professional report, English economic news has its own linguistic features. In vocabulary, terms, proper names and acronyms are wildly used, and many common words are given special meaning. In translating, strategies like literal translation, free translation, transliteration, transliteration combined with literal translation can be adopted. Syntactically, to convey more information within limited length, long sentences and complex sentences are used. And to ensure authenticity and objectivity of report, passive sentences are often used. In translating, strategies like dividing and recombining can be adopted. Based on translator’s practice, several main practical translation strategies are put forward in this paper. However, there are varied kinds of strategies in translating economic news, so they should be flexibly adopted according to specific circumstances.
