A Study Of Interpretation From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Interpretation is an important bridge of international communication. With the development of international exchanges, interpretation is gradually becoming a research topic for scholars and has been increasingly integrated with psychology, sociology, pragmatics, and other disciplines. This interdisciplinary combination has provided a more comprehensive theoretical guidance for the practice of interpretation. It is helpful to improve the quality translation.This thesis paper launches the research from the perspective of pragmatics and adopts linguistic adaptation theory put forward by Jef Verschueren, which selects the interpretation of foreign minister Wang Yi’s press conference in 2014 and 2015 as text The paper starts from the four analysis dimensions of adaptation theory and elaborates the application of the Adaption theory in the interpretation of the press conference. The thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is introduction, which includes the literature review and the backgrounds of the research. Literature review mainly writes about the researches of the Adaption theory both at home and abroad and the interpretation studies based on Adaption theory. The backgrounds of the paper mainly introduces the paper’s research significance, methodology and structure. The second part is theoretical framework. The paper gives a brief introduction to the Adaption theory, and elaborates on the four angles of Verschueren’s linguistic Adaption theory in detail, including contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes. The third part is the main body of the paper, which focuses on analyzing the application of choice-making and adaption in the interpretation of foreign minister Wang Yi’s press conference. Combined with examples, the thesis analyzes how to present the four angles of adaptation theory in the interpretation of foreign minister Wang Yi’s press conference.The fourth chapter is the application of adaptation theory in interpreting, which mainly analyzes the application of adaptation theory in the case of the absence of context and the distinctive emotional color of the source language. The fifth part is conclusion, which includes the research findings and the limitations of the thesis.In conclusion, the significance of this thesis is to discuss the value of the Adaptation theory in interpretation from the pragmatic perspective. Selecting the press conference of the Ministry of foreign affairs as material, the author hopes that it can be helpful to the research and practice of interpretation.
