A Report On The Translation Of Managing Natural World Heritage(Chapters 1-3)

To improve the management efficiency of heritage sites, the World Heritage Committee at its 30th session suggested publishing a series of thematic Resource Manuals, which include Managing Natural World Heritage (hereinafter referred to as Management Manual). As a popular science book on heritage management, this manual involves in a large number of proprietary vocabularies, passive sentences, attributive clauses and prepositional phrases to reveal objectivity and logicality of English genre on science and technology. On the other hand, this book is also characterized in English language by its popularity, literariness and large range of readers.Focusing on these features, the author illustrates some typical examples and difficulties encountered during the translation process from the aspects of vocabulary and sentence. In terms of words, this popular scientific English book contains a lot of proper and professional terms, and thus how to search for authentic corresponding translations for them has become the crux of their translation. As for the sentences, compared with Chinese which prefers to verbs, active voices and loose structures, English uses more passive voices, prepositional phrases and logical structures. How to make flexible bilingual transference between them is one crucial but tricky problem..To solve these problems, corresponding measures should be taken by translators. Firstly, for words, translators can determine their accurate translation by surfing the Internet and reading parallel bilingual texts for the most frequently used and authentic translations. Besides, translators can also flexibly employ diverse translation methods and skills to translate sentences. For example, English adjective clauses can be translated into Chinese adverbial clauses, and English passive voices into Chinese active voices. Secondly, the author manages to apply the theory of critical thinking to her translational practice, thereby discussing the functions of its six basic features and its appropriate application in different stages of translation process.Taking the whole translation process of Managing Natural World Heritage as an example, this report aims to explore efficient translation methods for transferring English texts on popular sciences into Chinese in terms of vocabulary and sentences, so as to provide some references for translators involved in the same fields.
