An Analysis Of The E-C Translation Strategies Applied In World Heritage Description

World Heritage refers to the irreplaceable cultural relics and natural landscapes with great significances and universal values, Its sites were approved by the World Heritage Committee and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The brief description of World Heritage is an important method of disseminating Chinese culture, and the translation of the description about China’s World Heritage directly influenced China’s national honor and interests. As the official authority of World Heritage, the translation department of the UN and the World Heritage Committee is the most authoritative institution for translating the World Heritage description, and the translation strategies taken by the translation department during the translating of World Heritage can be the references for other translators.According to the Trichotomy Translation Theory proposed by professor Fang Mengzhi, this paper analyzes the translating process of World Heritage Description from three perspectives:literary translation theory, linguistic translation theory, and cultural translation theory. The author takes the Chinese version and English version of China’s World Heritage Description from the official website of the world heritage committee as the research subjects. The research methods taken include the literature research methods and the comparative study method. According to the collected data, this paper summarized the official translation strategies used in translation activities, which can be the references for other official documents translation.This paper includes six chapters:the first chapter introduces the study’s background and significance, and defines the key terms; the second chapter is the domestic and international literature review of the translation theories, as well as the study about the description; the third chapter introduces the research object, the research questions and the research methods of this paper; The fourth chapter talks about the E-C translation strategies in the translating process of China’s world heritage description; the fifth is the conclusion as follows:(1) The types of the translation strategies about China’s World Heritage Descriptions are various. From this paper, the author finds out that the E-C translating of China’s World Heritage Description takes the target language as the translation criterion.(2) China’s World Heritage Description belongs to the propaganda materials, so its features ask the translation to obey the Chinese habits.(3) The translation of China’s World Heritage Description is influenced by the text styles, the ideology, the purpose of the translation etc., during the translation process, the translators need to consider all these factors, and choose the suitable translation strategies.
