A Translation Report Of China’s Second Continent: How A Million Migrants Are Building A New Empire In Africa(Chapter One)

This is an English-Chinese translation report on the first chapter from China’s Second Continent: How a Million Migrants Are Building a New Empire in Africa by Howard W. French, who travelled through about ten countries to look into the issue of Chinese emigrants there, including their commercial activities, the influence of all levels they have brought about in these African countries to reveal the Chinese emigrants issue in Africa. Translation of this book can help Chinese readers to know how a westerner sees the rising China and its people?s increasing existence in Africa, and also see the so-called China?s neo-colonialism in a critical way.The report briefly introduces the background of the translation program and then describes the pre-translation preparation from three perspectives: background knowledge preparation, technical preparation and preparation of the translation theories, and specific explanations are given from the aspects of the original text analysis, the analysis of the key and difficult points as well as the main translation tools in this program.In the case analysis chapter, the reporter analyzes the translation of the titles of the book and the first part of the book. Some typical examples are selected for further analysis from the two perspectives: 1.translation method of omission while translating the culture-loaded words; 2.application of contextual parameters and visions while translating the abstract nouns.Through the translation program description and case study, it is found: 1. Pre-translation preparations such as text analysis, paratexts research and relevant translation tools are of great importance in translation; 2. Translation theories and practice can supplement with each other, instead of the contrary. 3. A translator should clearly understand the ideological differences between China and the west to avoid unnecessary troubles. 4. In translation much attention should be paid to proofreading, which is an effective way to make the translation better quality.
