The development of the Chinese system of Rites and Music has had a long history. To study Rites and Music, the first thing that we should know is the relationship between the concept of Rites and Music and the system of Rites and Music. The concept of Rites and Music has had several characteristics including subjectivities, practicalities, histories and developments. The concept of Rites and Music reflects its social attribute for people who lived in different periods to understand. The system of Rites and Music was extended from the concept of Rites and Music, and the establishment of the system was to achieve the concept of Rites and Music in a series of norms of the social development. The concept of Rites and Music and the system of Rites and Music have existed as a complete approach at the national level. The system of Rites and Music gradually changed from mutil-rites to five rites during the Wei Jin South and North Dynasties. The Han nation and other minority nations started to play their instruments together in different places including at armies, at courts, and authorities. Finally the musical form of "Hu Han objects" was formed. Because of those mixed cultures, there were differences of them in the two different Zhou Dynasties. This thesis will focus on changes in the concept of Rites and Music in the North Dynasties. Five stages of the changes will be discussed by considering perspectives of institutes and musicians under the five rites in status of musical developments in different periods. The culture of the North Dynasties was based on the Han culture and the nomadic culture. Tunes, musical instruments and musical pieces all had been created in different ways, with different music corresponding to different ritual ceremonies. The author will not only concentrate on the inheritance from the Han Wei Dynasties and the development in the North Dynasties, but also on the contrast of the development of Rites and Music in the South Dynasties. And then it will go further to discuss evolutions of the relationship between the Hu and Han nations in the Sui Dynasty and Tang Dynasty.
