Education requires communication, and communication is a process of propagation. International Chinese language education is not only an educational process, but also an international communication process, so it is of great benefits to analyze the international Chinese language education from the perspective of communication. In recent years, this topic has aroused wide academic concern and many scholars have figured out innovative ways to apply the communication theories into international Chinese language educational research, and provided plenty of constructive ideas for the international Chinese language education. However, there are some biases during the research of this topic. Firstly, the current research over-emphasizes the international Chinese language education and lacks deep analyses regarding to the application of communication theories in international Chinese language education area. Secondly, most of the applications of communication theories concentrate on two areas:the mode of communicating process and intercultural communication, and few other theories are referred to. Finally, there are more macroscopic analyses and fewer specific analyses. Most of the theses use communication theories to broadly analyze the development of international Chinese language education or the construction of Confucius Institute, however, fewer theses analyze the specific issues relating to the international Chinese language education like the teaching staff, textbook materials and teaching program.Chinese language learners are the audiences of international Chinese language education and they are a critical part of the communication process. With regard to the current research status and the importance of audiences, this paper will start from the connection between communication theory and international Chinese language education and give a basic description and analysis about the international Chinese language education communicator, communication information, communication media and communication audience. After which, this paper will use related communication theories to present a comprehensive analysis about the group background of the audiences, the selection of media and their effects on language study. Some inspirations can be received during the research process:Firstly, during the research of international Chinese language education, special attention should be paid to the research under communication theory, especially the research about the audiences of international Chinese language education.Secondly, international Chinese language education has different types of audiences. We should emphasize more on expected audiences, avoid losing existing audiences, try to excavate potential audiences and facilitate converting potential audiences into real audiences.Thirdly, the group background of audiences can affect Chinese learning directly. We should not only have an understanding about our audiences’group background to individualize our teaching, but also lead the group communication and use it to facilitate language study.Fourthly, the media contact purpose of audiences can influence the Chinese learning. We should pay attention to the audiences’learning motives, enrich the content of communication, expand the channels of communication and develop various teaching modes to satisfy different needs of audiences.
