A Report On Translating Sports Administration Manual

Sport has been given more and more attention since 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was held successfully in China. An increasing number of sport groups would like to hire foreign managers and coaches to participate in their daily course training and management work. In addition, with the booming of nonliterary translation studies in the academic field, the study of sport management translation has been thriving in recent decades. Many translators and researchers have been undertaking the translation practice and academic researches in this field. However, the quality of translations remains to be improved because of translators’ inadequate professional knowledge and competence.Under such circumstances, this report, by conducting a real translation project of translating Sports Administration Manual, locates the problems and explores feasible solutions to them. The client of this translation task is PT Coaches Association. During the translation process, the following problems are most prominent. At lexical level, the inaccuracy of the polysemy and inconsistency of the terminology are the obvious problems. Especially the polysemy problem is often ignored in the translated wok. At syntactical level, some sentences are just translated word by word without considering using translation methods flexibly. In addition, how to deal with long sentences remains to be a challenge. At textual level, how to keep the consistent style with source text and how to keep the coherence of the translation are another two problems to be considered.After locating the above problems, the report offers following translation solutions at three levels. At lexical level, the author adopts contextualizing strategy to deal with the polysemy translation problem and makes some DIY glossary tables to keep the consistency of terminology translation. At syntactical level, division and restructuring methods are adopted to translate long sentences, and the conversion from passive voice to active voice makes the target text more natural. At textual level, this report choosesplain style translation method to keep the consistent style between the source text and the target text, and by shifting from cohesion of the source text to the coherence of the translation at semantic cohesion and structural cohesion to guarantee the translation quality.This study will hopefully promote the development of sport management translation and the communication with foreigner sport academic field. In addition, the translation of this book will be helpful for sport workers and sport groups in the daily management work by offering some successful management experience for them.
