Located in the area where nomadic culture and farming culture meet, Inner Mongolia region occupies important position in the history of ancient China. During the period of Eastern and Western Han Dynasties, it become the warring place which Hun and Han fought for because of its special location. The activities of striving for territory dominance and consolidating regime made the situation of nomadic groups moving southward and central government sending a large amount of immigrants to the northern borderland and formed the rich immigrating culture of Inner Mongolia which therefore became the important immigrating area during the period of Eastern and Western Han Dynasties. Immigrants played an important role in promoting the ethnic fusion and consolidating borderland becoming a significant issue of historical study. The study of immigrants can be applied in population history, borderland history, culture history,.etc. in which they complement each other. At the same time, the study of immigrants in ancient times can give some lessons to the modern studies.Based on the previous research achievements and historical material, this paper uses research means and results of archaeology and historical geography. According to the clue of time, it discusses immigration background, the general situation and the effect of immigration from four stages, the earlier period and the middle and later period separately in the Western and Eastern Han Dynasty. Taking Shuofang prefecture for example, it analyses the situation of immigration in these four stages so as to generalize immigration characteristics during different periods from which this paper aims to make an comparison and analyze the immigrants moving from the Eastern and Western Han Dynasties to Inner Mongolia region. The purpose of this is to find similarities and differences which is also the innovative points of this paper.
