In this paper, four advanced Chinese spoken textbooks in current use are chosen as the research object to discuss the merits as well as demerits of topic selection and design in the four books. On the basis of this process, this paper aims to make suggestions about advanced oral Chinese teaching, and compilation of related teaching materials, promoting the further development of advanced oral Chinese teaching for foreigners.This paper is composed of six parts:The first part is an introduction about the origin of the research, the research status at home and abroad, the purpose and significance of the research and the methods and ideas used in the paper.The second part focuses on the analysis of the topic content in International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education, pointing out the significance of topic design and content according to the book and discussing the problems in topic classification.The third part takes the four advanced Chinese spoken textbooks, Developmental Chinese:Advanced Chinese (Second Edition), Advanced Oral Chinese Course, Advanced Spoken Chinese (Second Edition), spoken Chinese:High Level.as the research object to analyze topic types, topic distribution, characters of topic arrangement, cultural elements of topics and some other aspects in the four books. Meanwhile, this part also conclude some problems in the selection and compilation of topics in advanced Chinese spoken textbooks.The fourth part is about the problems in designing the topics, articles, and exercises of the above mentioned four textbooks, mainly based on the analysis of task design in International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education.The fifth part are some concrete proposals on activating classroom atmosphere in terms of both students and teachers while considering teaching practice in classrooms.The last part is a conclusion of all main views in this paper, pointing out the problems and limit of the paper.
