The Analysis Of Literary Translation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Published in 2013, The Goldfinch is the third novel written by the American writer, Donna Tartt. This project chooses its first chapter to conduct a research. By applying Skopos Theory to the text, this thesis proposes that the proper way to translate literary works is to convey as much information as possible in the source language to the target language readers and make them fully understand and appreciate the translated version.Skopos Theory includes three principles:skopos principle, coherence principle and fidelity principle. It stresses that the purposes decide translation methods. In the translation project, the author intends to achieve two goals:to convey the mental activity of the main characters of the original text and keep the novel’s original features; and to adopt proper translation methods to improve translation’s readability. The thesis expounds the translation process from Skopos Theory and its three principles by adopting proper translation strategies and methods. The translation methods this paper discusses are paraphrase, restructuring long sentences, and literal translation.This translation project proves that the application of Skopos Theory has a positive influence on literary translation and translators of literary texts can benefit from the understanding and application of Skopos Theory.
