A Study Of Chinese Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Translation Ethics

In recent years, with the hot broadcasting of US TV series House of Cards and Korean TV series You Who Came From the Stars,more and more overseas films and TV plays come into China, and they are sought after by the Chinese audiences. However, the output of domestic TV plays met an embarrassing situation in foreign countries. One of the bottlenecks that cause this situation is the subtitle translation. Because of its limitation of space and time, subtitle translation has put forwards higher request to translators. So in order to export more excellent TV series to foreign countries, it is urged to improve the quality of subtitle translation.Translation, as a kind of communication, is often accompanied by a variety of interpersonal relationship. In this process,it is inevitably associated with the principle of ethics. The relation between translation and ethics is not simple and rigid,but also a dynamic process of interaction. A responsible translator should follow ethical norms and holds careful thoughts and willingness to deal with the relation between intentions, reality and morality. Chesterman’s five modes of translation ethics play a significant role in translators’ practice and they have great explanation towards translation problems. However, there are someoverlaps and contradictions among the five modes, which ask the translators to think about before translation activities and make appropriate adjustments in different contexts.Based on Chesterman’s five modes of translation ethics, this thesis analyzes translators’ translation ethics revealed in the American version of TV series- Empresses in the Palace and then concludes some feasible strategies applied in the process of subtitle translation. Through careful analysis, it is not difficult to find that Chesterman’s five modes of translation ethics are all reflected in the Empresses in the Palace. The translator does not completely stick to a certain mode of translation ethics, but also offers specific analysis for specific issues. Then he makes appropriate adjustments to meet the needs of the request of different translation situations. This thesis aims to emphasize the importance of translation ethics in order to arouse the translators’ ethical awareness.
