As an emerging field of translation studies, subtitle translation has been studied from different angles. However, domestic studies are fairly narrow because most of them focus on principles, methods, techniques in the translation process from the micro-level,lacking macro researches and effective theoretical guidance and they mainly focus on foreign films and TV programs that have been introduced in abundance in recent years. This unbalanced situation is not helpful to subtitle translation studies. This thesis probes into the subtitle translation of Empresses in the Palace(pinyin:Zhen Huan Zhuan)from the perspective of eco-translatology and tests its applicability to the subtitle translation.Descriptive method will be adopted to expound theoretical framework of eco-translatology and explain two main terms, that is translational eco-environment and holistic adaption and selection. For the translational eco-environment of Empresses in the Palace, the thesis will analyze the intellectual property right(IPR)issue and its publisher's expected aims, and then discuss the linguistic and cultural environment as well as social environment and political environment of the drama. Then,an integrated method of theoretical research and text analysis will be used to explore the translator's adaptive selection in linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions by analyzing some typical cases in the drama. The analysis shows that in the translation process of Empresses in the Palace,,the translator, who has adapted to translational eco-environment,adopts two main strategies such as foreignization, including transliteration and literal translation, and domestication, including substitution, reduction and explanatory free translation to achieve adaptive selection in the three dimensions, producing translated version which successfully overcomes language barriers, cultural differences and helps target audiences understand Chinese ancient palace dramas better.
