In English, the world Nation not only has a meaning of ethnic, but also a meaning of country, and the concept of nation-state comes out with the development of current events and arises at the historic moment. Laos is a multi-ethnic country which has a long history with bumpy experience. From a broader view to look at the Laos national construction and national integration, you will find that Laos, as a part of world’s process of national construction and national integration, presents many similarities compared with other countries’and regions’processes. However, at the same time it also has some unique characteristics.To sum up, the historical basis of Laos national construction can be described as a total of following 12 points:The people of all ethnic groups lack of reliable collective memories of the wars and divisions of Laos early history; The unification of Laos; The history of Siam controlling Laos; The French colonists’national oppression and exploitation policy; The French colonists’education policy; The French colonists’finishing construction of the Lao language; The sign of the agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Laos; From 1954-1975, a 21-year peace between different factions and internal forces of Laos kingdom; The establishment of the Lao people’s democratic republic; The promulgation of Lao people’s democratic republic constitution; Laos domestic complex geographical factors; The widespread propagation and belief of Buddhism in Laos.Since Laos began to build a nation-state, its goal significantly changed varying from different periods. Laos people’s democratic republic is the contemporary goal of building a nation-state. From the perspective of ethnic nationalism, it integrates and recombines Laos different ethnics on the basis of national equality and harmony to realize a unified nation-state, which is on the basis of a unified nationality.At the same time, in the context of Lao civic nationalism, national construction goal of Lao is to build a free, democratic, united, prosperous nation-state not only on the basis of citizens’freedom and equality, but also under the protection of the constitution and the law.Laos national integration has made some progress, but as a whole, the progress is limited and facing a variety of difficulties. We can view these troubles as Lao dilemma.
