This paper is a translation practice report on an excerpt from Cultural Policy. Cultural Policy was written by Dava O’Brien, who is a senior lecturer of cultural industry in City University London. His research scope mainly covers five fields, including cultural policy, urban policy, public management, cultural value and creative industries. Cultural Policy succeeds in integrating cutting-edge sociological research on social change and inequality with an analysis of urbanism, creativity and cultural value. This book is now the state of the art and will be a crucial resource for all students of cultural policy. This paper mainly introduces the steps of translation, the important and difficult points in the process of translation and the analysis and summary of this translation practice. The first chapter of this paper is to present the following aspects:text type of Cultural Policy, the development of academic translation and research status and importance of academic translation. Except for those, the author also introduces the main content of the book, the research orientation, academic points and achievements of Dava O’Brien and its social influence in this chapter. The second chapter introduces the whole process of translation which covers preparation, translation process and proofreading. During the process of preparation, there is a need to search background information about author and content of the book, read the source text and understand the translation requirements. The third one analyzes the difficult and important points, including translation of proper nouns, complex sentences, and language style. The translation of proper noun falls into three categories:proper nouns of place, names and terminology. Complex sentences include attributive clauses, long and difficult sentences. The last part is the summary of this translation practice. After several amendments, there are not only many gains and accumulated experience but also deficiencies needed to improve.
