Report On The Translation Practice Of Zhong Guo Zhao Chuan Shi

China is vast in territory and water area. It is one of the four ancient civilization countries. The Yangtze river and Yellow river had played important roles in the development of Chinese agricultural civilization, and the importance of ocean in Chinese culture was thus often neglected. As a result there is not much study of the maritime culture compared to that in the West, so not enough attention is paid to the study of techniques related to shipbuilding. However, the recent discovery of many archeological discoveries, especially the discovery of some shipwrecks, has drawn our attention to the ocean, from which we can not only gain insights of ancient shipbuilding technology but also the communication between China and other countries in history. Many facts and technologies written in ancient books have been proved by the unearthed cultural relics. It is of great value for us to learn more about the shipbuilding technologies, diplomatic history, Chinese ancient culture and so on.It is thus meaningful to do the translation of the book "Zhong Guo Zao Chuan Shi"(Chinese Shipbuilding History). On one hand, it can help demonstrating the shipbuilding history in ancient China, which is rightly against the prejudice that Chinese shipbuilding started very late and the technology was not advanced. On the other hand, we can also promote the communication between Chinese and western in the field of the shipbuilding technology and shipbuilding culture, with the help of historical archives.The paper is divided into five parts. The first chapter is the description of the task which includes the source of the task, requirements of the task and the research meaning of it. The second chapter is mainly about the theoretical basis and it also includes the standards of scientific translation, an overview of functional equivalence theory and the guiding roleof the theory on scientific translation. The third chapter is about the process of the task which consists of preparation before the translation, translation process and the work after translation(mainly about checking). In the fourth chapter, it is mainly about the application of functional equivalence theory on the translation practice and 16 examples are shown in the article. The fifth chapter is the end of the article, in this part, it is about the translation of the article and experiences and feelings when doing the translation combining with the key and difficult points. Generally speaking, when doing translation, we can not do word for word translation. We must change the sentence pattern and expression to adapt to the target readers. Some historical background information needs to be explained if it may cause misunderstanding to the readers. Scientific works must be concise, so we must use simple words to express some professional problems to improve the readability.According to the study, I find that even though the functional equivalence is not perfect. It is hard to evaluate the similarities of the source readers feelings on the source text and target readers feelings on the target text. It is demanding for the readers bilingual competence and it is hard to find enough proper samples to evaluate the similarities. However, it can provide important guidance for the scientific translation. The translation article can not only offer accurate content for the target readers but also convey the writing style to them.
