This translation report is based on the translation of the first four chapters of The Science of Supercars: The technology that powers the greatest cars in the world. This book mainly describes the technology revolution that promotes the development of supercars from the early superchargers to the contemporary complex machines.Furthermore,it focuses on the engineering masterpieces produced by cutting-edge science. The translation of this book could enable domestic readers to form a full picture of the development history of supercar technologies. It also provides the latest reference material for Chinese automotive scholars and supercar fans.As a supercar book,it not only introduces substantial automotive technologies but also describes significant historical events that promote the model revolution. Therefore, the translator shall carefully perceive the information delivered by the original text during the translation process and present the subjective world constructed by the book to the target language readers accurately.Compared with other translation theories, functional equivalence theory emphasizes “loyalty” and aims to reproduce the source-language message from the meaning to style in the closest natural equivalent form, which accords with the features of rigorous wording and objective description in scientific texts. This translation report employs functional equivalence as the guiding principle and tries to solve translation difficulties in three perspectives. At the lexical level, difficulties of the specialization of common expressions in contexts, the composition, abbreviation, and the unification of terminologies would be resolved. To achieve lexical equivalence, the author could employ methods like free translation, transliteration, and conversion. At the syntax level, based on the bilingual language differences, difficulties of translating long sentences and passive sentences would be resolved. To achieve sentence equivalence, methods like division and amplification shall be used.At the discourse level, the author sorts out the complex logical relationships among sentences in the discourse and tries to resolve the difficulties of choosing appropriate conjunctions and logical words. To achieve passage equivalence, methods like marking the topic sentence, adding connectives and logical words would be applied. This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is task description. It introduces the background knowledge of sportscar, the objectives and significance of the report, and the overall structure.Chapter Two is process description in which the three phases of pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation are illustrated.Chapter Three introduces the theoretical basis. It mainly illustrates functional equivalence and discusses its application in scientific texts and the guiding significance for practice.Chapter Four carries out a case analysis and summarizes the specific translation methods in the auto-text from three levels.Chapter Five concludes the translator's experience for this practice and gives suggestions on how to improve translation ability.
