Interpreting Practice Report On The Roles Of Interpreter Viewed From Skopostheorie

With the rapid development of economic globalization and information technology, communications and exchanges among different countries are ever more frequent and the demand for interpreters from all walks of life is also increasing greatly. Therefore, the interpreter’s roles in communicative activities have become an often discussed topic in interpretation studies. Traditional translation theories contend that a qualified interpreter should be transparent, invisible and passive. Thus he can only transfer information from one language to another without any personal involvement. However, in the actual interpretation activities, the bilingual and bicultural interpreter plays an integral part in the whole process and facilitates the effective communication among people of different languages and cultures.This report analyzes the roles of interpreter from the perspective of Skopostheorie through practical examples. It consists of four chapters. Firstly, chapter one describes the author’s three interpretation practices, including the background information, pre-interpretation work and tasks’ comparison. In the next chapter, the author gives a brief introduction to Skopostheorie, and then analyzes the three main roles the author played in these practice procedures, i.e. information deliverer, cultural mediator and project coordinator. In the third chapter, some methods to enhance the interpreter’s role fulfillment are proposed. The concluding chapter makes a summary about the whole report. Hopefully, the report might give some inspiration and reference for other interpreters to understand their roles in the future.
