Nowadays, both scholars and practitioners in translation recognize that full comprehension of the source text is the basis for smooth translation, which also suggests that comprehension refers to more than the recognition of single words or simple transition of language structure. However, in lots of literature the importance of comprehension is underestimated as the first step in translation. The reason why comprehension is so important for translation is that languages differ from each other in their words, structure and there in no one-to-one correspondence between two languages. Comprehension is relative and subjective. The major factor that influences translator’s comprehension includes the complexity of text, the receiver’s familiarity with linguistic components. For interpreters, the key to comprehension is to fully understand the function of the text structure. With the implement of China’s "Belt and Road" initiative, China’s foreign communication has gone into a new phase, which brings much more demand for interpreters. Due to the late development of China’s research on interpretation, the complete research system of conference interpretation is rather poor in China. In the whole interpreting process, comprehension is the most important factor, the ignorance of which will cause comprehension barriers for interpreters and hence influence the quality of interpretation and the improvements of interpretation.Taking all these factors into account, the thesis attempted to summarize the speech of American President Obama’s speech at the 70th UN assembly under the guidance of Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Equation. As a practice report, this thesis focuses on the development and status quo of conference interpretation and the whole paper consists of four chapters.Chapter One deals with research background and meaning, as well as brief introduction to this interpreting practice.Chapter Tow discusses the whole interpreting process which includes preparation before interpretation, interpretation and evaluationChapter Three Introduce the Gile’s Effort Model of interpreting and comprehension equation and describes barriers during interpretation, which are linguistic barriers, extra-linguistic barriers and analysis barriers.ChapterFour analyzes the comprehension barriers in conference interpretation under the guidance of Gile’s comprehension equation and attempts to give strategies for the improvement of interpretation skills.
