This thesis presents an overview, some theoretic reflections, and a tentative conclusion of the translation practice project undertaken in the second year of the author’s MTI program at Yangzhou University. Entrusted by Wuxi Guanwei Machine Healthcare Center, the project consists in English to Chinese translation of the operation manual of Parker PVP Series Variable Volume Piston Pumps manufactured and supplied by Parker Hannifin Corporation (USA). The source text.12146 words in total, has distinctive lexical and syntactic features peculiar to operation manuals of equipment products and is characterized by abundant use of technical terminology, objective descriptive directive functionality, and involvement of comprehensive technological background knowledge. In the translation process, adaptation theory put forward by Jef Verschueren was assumed as theoretic and directive guideline in an effort to ensure high reader acceptability, accurate transfer of technical information and operational guidance. The project was completed in 30 days and the translation text has since been adopted by the entrusting party as its official Operation Manual of Parker PVP Series Variable Volume Piston Pumps accompanying each unit of the product sold in China.According to adaptation theory, language has three properties:variability, negotiability and adaptability, which work together to contribute to the dynamic process of choice-making in actual language use. Evaluation of text adaptability involves four perspectives of pragmatic consideration, which are contextual correlates, structural objects, dynamics and salience. As translation is a special kind of language use. its process may be regarded as a choice-making process for the purpose of efficient communication. Drawing upon empirical analysis, this report reflects on the translation process from the perspective of contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability within the framework of adaptation theory to probe into the general translation strategies applicable to the E-C translation of equipment operation manuals. This report draws the tentative conclusion that adaptation theory can offer theoretical guidance for the translation of equipment operation manuals and the translation versions of equipment operation manuals ought to adapt to the linguistic and communicative contexts and linguistic structures of the target language. Besides, translation strategies like literal translation, liberal translation, conversion, omission, repetition, division and restructuring can be flexibly adopted in the translation of equipment operation manuals to adapt to the context and linguistic structure of the target language.
